When I was a kid in the 70s, I would work for my dad bailing hay in the summers. I always had a small transistor radio with me…
At noon I would break for lunch and park the tractor under a tree for shade, eat my lunch, and listen to Paul Harvey. Hearing his voice now takes me back to warm summers when my parents, my brother, my grandmothers, aunts, and uncles were all alive and well. My heart aches for that time.
From 1952 through 2008, Paul Harvey’s voice would reach as many as 24 million people a week. The “Paul Harvey News” was carried on 1,200 radio stations, 400 American Forces Network stations, and 300 newspapers. Arguably it was his iconic radio segment “The Rest of the Story” that most people are familiar with.
America found a treasure in Paul Harvey. Generations listened to him not only for his stories and wisdom but also for the calming effect his assuring and easily recognizable voice which took you to another place for a few moments, challenging and perhaps forever changing your way of thinking.
This man would teach you a lot about life if you just listen. I miss those times. Those moments of self-reflection and deep thought. Sometimes I wonder if we as individuals do enough of that anymore.
Long before he started his career in television, though, Paul Harvey wrote an essay that he updated several times throughout the years. It’s a controversial piece, and you can take it however you like: symbolically or literally —it rings true either way.
Street Outlaws star Lizzy Musi dies with her family by her side after a year-long battle with stage 4 breast cancer
A street racer named Lizzy Musi has died after being told she had stage-four breast cancer, according to her father.
Mooresville, North Carolina’s Street Outlaws: No Prep Kings star told everyone about her diagnosis last year, which meant she had to leave the show.
In a Facebook post, Musi’s famous dad Pat said, “Surrounded by her family and in the comfort of her own home, Lizzy was called to heaven at 11:25 pm tonight.”
“Thank you for all your prayers and help during her illness.
At this point, the family would like to be left alone to deal with their grief and make plans.
“We will give an update as soon as we have information to share.”
Women and girls looked up to the racer after she won three straight episodes of Street Outlaws: No Prep Kings in 2019.
With a time of 3.802 seconds, she was also the first woman to go faster than 200 mph in eighth-mile doorslammer racing.
Back in July 2014, Lizzy Musi made more history when she won a Pro Nitrous national event at the Professional Drag Racers Association US Drags. She was the first woman to do so.
A 33-year-old racer who was honest about having stage 4 triple-negative breast cancer, which is one of the most aggressive types of breast cancer, has received a lot of praise.
Musi was still hopeful about her health, even though the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes and liver.
She told everyone in Germany last month that she had “great news” while she was getting treatment for cancer.
Even though the driver didn’t say more, she had already said that she was going to the Medias Klinikum treatment center in Burghausen, Germany.
Last month, Lizzy told Drag Illustrated, “I’ve pretty much tried everything here in the US, and I’ve looked into the doctor and treatment in Germany that can separate my liver and treat it.”
One fan wrote under Pat’s post, which was shared on Musi’s Facebook page, “This just hurts my heart.”
“She gave young girls a lot to think about. It was fun to watch her race.”
“One of the best female racers,” said someone else.
“Younger people were so inspired by how positive and happy she was.” This is so unbelievable.
We’re sorry for her family’s loss. Run fast, Lizzy, up in heaven.”
LOVER OF MY LIFE
This year, Musi publicly thanked her boyfriend Jeffrey Earnhardt, who is the grandson of famous Nascar driver Dale Earnhardt, for always being there for her.
“This guy right here has supported me like no other from sleepless ER nights and dealing with my health to cheering me on at my races,” Musi wrote on the app.
“He did insanely well when I got to see him play this past weekend after a long off-season. @jearnhardt1 #thankful #unique #howloveshouldfeel”
They started going out together after she broke up with racecar driver Kyle Kelley in late 2023.
A touching Facebook post from January by Musi revealed some details about her relationship with Earnhardt.
“I found a man when I least expected it, on top of going through the worst time in my life… it didn’t phase him and he has loved me unconditionally since,” said she.
“No hair…disease or not, he’s seen me at my worst…” Getting calls telling me how strong and beautiful I am; talking on FaceTime without my wig on and still getting compliments… I’m immensely grateful for you, Jeffrey Earnhardt.
Millions of people on Instagram have called Earnhardt their “soulmate” and thanked him for “loving her the way she deserved” until the end.
People have sent Earnhardt their condolences, but she hasn’t said anything public about her death yet.
He gave an update on Musi’s return to racing at the end of April, after she raced at Virginia Motorsport Park in her ’69 Camaro named Bonnie.
According to her partner, she and the team were “firing on all cylinders.”
FREAK OUT
Musi died just two months after Nathan Schaldach, better known as Cali Nate, who also played Nathan on Street Outlaws.
The accident that killed Nate happened in southwest Texas on April 6.
He crashed his car while racing in Eagle Pass, which is about two hours west of San Antonio.
The racer died from his injuries even though he was taken to the hospital.
The news was confirmed by his girlfriend Courtney Paulshock, who wrote a sad post on Facebook about how she felt “shattered” after losing “her person.”
Musi praised her coworker and called him a “hell of a guy.”
The actress wrote on Instagram, “Hard to wrap my mind around this one.”
“We all know what the risk is when we get in these cars.”
When we filmed the street shows in Vegas and Cali, I got to race with Nate.
“Trustworthy street racer and great guy!” Say “Godspeed”
When asked about Nate and Paulshock’s relationship, Musi asked his fans to pray for his girlfriend who was hurting.
“Please keep my good friend @c_paulshockphotography in your thoughts and prayers!” She went on.
“I know how deeply they loved each other and how they couldn’t be apart.” This really hurts my feelings.”
Her sad family said that the veteran actress died in a “unexpected accident” while she was out for a walk near her home in Washington, D.C.
The 1954 holiday classic White Christmas starred Whitfield as Susan Waverly.
Valley Memorial Hospital in Yakima, Washington, was where she died. Her family was there with her.
They wrote: “‘The life of Anne Langham Whitfield Phillips was a beautiful one, with every second used to uplift the world and those around her.”
“Through the kindness of neighbours who provided expert medical support, family had the gift to say goodbye and express love and gratitude, a gift we will always cherish.”
“Just this past December during the holidays, Annie was able to watch White Christmas with her family on the movie’s 70th anniversary,” says Whitfield’s obituary.
“Annie was a talented actor, but Los Angeles didn’t have enough trees for her, so in the 1970s she left Hollywood for a new life “up north.”
“Annie became dedicated to causes that promote peace and protect nature during this time of change.”
Annie worked hard as an activist and community organizer after she “retired,” right up until the day she died.
Annie’s three children and seven grandchildren were the most important things in her life.
“She was beloved by her family, who were always her first priority.” .
Three kids and seven grandchildren will miss her.
The legendary performer, actor, and radio host was born on August 27, 1938, in Oxford, Mississippi.
As a child, Whitfield started acting in radio dramas. While going to UCLA, he continued to act and work on radio shows.
Whitfield’s mother brought her to Hollywood when she was four years old to help her start her career in show business.
“STRIVE TO THE END”
While this was going on, her father had been sent overseas to lead the Army Band.
Whitfield has been working in theater since 1949 and has been the lead in many shows, such as Annie Get Your Gun.
The following year, she started getting small parts on TV shows like Racket Squad, One Man’s Family, and Hollywood Opening Night. She also got a lot of small parts in movies.
In 1954, Whitfield was only 15 years old when she played the lead role in the musical comedy White Christmas.
She played Susan Waverly, who is the granddaughter of Major General Thomas Waverly (Dean Jagger), who owns the Columbia Inn hotel where Danny Kaye as Phil Davis and Bing Crosby as Bob Wallace take the stage.
Whitfield kept playing small parts in movies throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Her last movie role was in Robert Altman’s 1999 comedy Cookies’ Fortune.
Back in the days before technology simplified communication, postal services were relied upon to deliver letters and packages, much like the way pigeons were once used as mail carriers. However, unlike the feathered messengers, the weight of mail delivered by the post office was a crucial factor in determining shipping rates. This is where the vintage postal scale comes into play.
Before the advent of email, postal services were the primary means of delivering mail and packages. And the vintage postal scale was a crucial tool in this process. These scales were designed with various mechanisms, such as analog spring mechanisms or balances, to accurately weigh items and determine postage costs. They came in different sizes and shapes, from handheld scales to larger tabletop models, to cater to different needs.
Today, postal scales have evolved to include advanced features and precision, making them indispensable tools for businesses and individuals who regularly send physical mail and packages. They typically have a platform to place the item to be weighed, and the weight is displayed on a digital or analog readout.
These modern postal scales also often have additional features like tare functions, which allow the user to subtract the weight of packaging materials to obtain the net weight of the item being shipped. With their ability to provide accurate measurements, postal scales ensure that the right amount of postage is applied, avoiding any overpayment or underpayment.
Apart from their functionality, vintage postal scales also have a classic design that adds a touch of nostalgia to any space. They are not only practical but also serve as decorative pieces, making them popular among collectors and enthusiasts of retro items. Some people even use them to enhance the ambiance of their home office or as unique conversation starters when guests visit.
So, the next time you see a vintage postal scale, take a moment to appreciate this fascinating object’s history. Remember, it played an essential role in ensuring that letters and packages reached their destinations efficiently.
“Please come over and help me. I have a challenging jigsaw puzzle, and I can’t figure out how to get started.”
Her boyfriend asks,
“What is it supposed to be when it’s finished?”
The blonde replies,
“According to the picture on the box, it’s a rooster.”
Her boyfriend decides to go over and help with the puzzle. When he arrives, he sees puzzle pieces scattered all over the table. He takes a moment to examine the pieces and then looks at her with a smile,
“First of all, no matter how we try, these pieces won’t resemble a rooster. Secondly, let’s not stress about it. How about we have a nice cup of tea and… put all these Corn Flakes back in the box?”
In 2006, he ran for governor against Ricky Perry, drawing significant media attention, though ultimately finishing fourth. He also pursued the Democratic nomination for agriculture commissioner in 2010 and 2014, albeit unsuccessfully.
A longtime friend, Clive Hattersley, fondly recalled him as an extraordinary communicator who could evoke deep emotions, whether through tears or laughter. Hattersley also mentioned that he had been battling Parkinson’s disease.
He first gained recognition in the early 1970s by forming the satirical country band Kinky Friedman and The Texas Jewboys, known for songs like “They Ain’t Makin’ Jews Like Jesus Anymore” and “Get Your Biscuits in the Oven and Your Buns in the Bed.” Although the band’s run was brief, he continued his musical journey, releasing a self-titled solo album in 1974 and embarking on a two-year tour with Bob Dylan.
Throughout his career, he released 18 albums, with his final work, “Circus of Life,” appearing in 2018.

Attles broke some incredible records with the Warriors throughout the course of his more than 60-year tenure.
Alvin Attles, a legend in the team’s history who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 87, was honored with a heartfelt tribute by the Golden State Warriors.
In a special film, the NBA franchise featured poignant remarks about the former point guard, coach, executive, and Golden State ambassador from another legendary Warriors player, Wilt Chamberlain.
The video was released following the Warriors’ confirmation of Attles’ passing on Wednesday. Old film of the native of New Jersey entering the team’s workout area served as the starting point.

He paused to see a banner hanging on the wall commemorating the team’s 1975 NBA championship. It was hanging among the team’s retired jerseys, his own included.
Then, in a previous interview, Chamberlain—who passed away in 1999—was heard discussing the personality of his former comrade.
“Nobody I’ve ever met doesn’t like Al Attles,” remarked the well-known center.
“And I think that’s really special, especially in our professional sports game, because the man is a man of character first and foremost.”
After then, a profile of Attles was shown on the film, with Warriors announcer Bob Fitzgerald delivering the speech.
Highlights from the 6-foot-1 guard’s playing career and his 2019 Hall of Fame speech were displayed throughout the interview.
A few of the videos featured him giggling alongside current Golden State players like Draymond Green and Steph Curry.
Head coach Steve Kerr walked up and spoke about how Attles had been the “face of our franchise” for many years.
After the initial shot of him at the practice facility, there was a final shot in the film showing him walking off the screen.
The Warriors released a statement saying, “Attles passed away at home in the San Francisco Bay Area with his family by his side.”
He joined the team two years prior to its 1962 relocation from Philadelphia to Northern California, and he played for them for 11 seasons.
He was known as “The Destroyer” because of his fierce defense play and all-around toughness on the floor.
The night when Chamberlain scored a remarkable 100 points against the New York Knicks in 1962, the North Carolina A&T player finished second on the squad with 17 points.
Attles led the Warriors as their coach from 1970 to 1983. He guided the squad to its first championship in the NBA Finals in 1975.
He is still the team’s most successful head coach with 557 victories.
Attles spent more than 60 years in a variety of capacities at Golden State.
He will have played for one franchise longer than any other player in NBA history as a result.
“He leaves behind a profound legacy in the game of basketball and the Bay Area community, but especially as a family man and humanitarian,” the Warriors announced in response to Alvin’s passing.
“All of us who knew and loved him, including his son Alvin and wife Wilhelmina, mourn his loss.”
Long before technology sent single socks into a spinning purgatory, people were more resourceful, creating tools to effectively complete the most daunting of household chores.
One of those tools is this wooden peg, which over the years evolved into a two-piece pin that secured items to a line. This was a significant improvement from the earlier model that fed socks and other garments to the wind, “a serious evil to washerwomen.”
Recently, an online user found little wooden dowels with two legs and went to social media looking for help in identifying the objects.
The Facebook post attracted a generation of nostalgic boomers, offering the answer: “Old school clothespins. [We] used them for hanging clean wet clothes outside on the [clothes] line to dry in the sun [and] fresh air!”
A wooden clothespin, also known simply as a clothes peg, is a traditional household tool used for hanging wet laundry on a clothesline to dry. Today, the pins typically consist of two wooden pieces hinged together at one end, with a spring mechanism that provides the necessary tension to grip onto the clothing.
The history of wooden clothespins can be traced back to ancient times when people used various methods to secure their laundry while drying.
The earliest carved clothespins date back to ancient times and were quite different from the wooden clothespins we are familiar with today. These early clothespins were typically handcrafted from natural materials such as wood, bone, or even stone, and oftentimes featured ornate patterns or motifs.
The modern wooden clothespin, as we know it today, emerged in the 19th century as a response to the growing need for a convenient and effective tool to hang laundry.
The earliest versions of the clothespins we know today, were handcrafted from solid wood, often maple or birch, and featured a simple design consisting of two pieces of wood hinged together with a small spring or metal wire.
The modern design we know today, dates back an 1853 patent of a clothespin by Vermont’s David M. Smith.
According to his patent, dated October 25, 1853, the updated clothespins “are hinged together” by a wire “so that the two longer legs may be moved toward each other and at the same time move the shorter ones apart.”
The two wooden pieces are shaped in such a way that they form a clamp when squeezed together. This allows the clothespin to securely hold onto garments without causing damage. The spring mechanism ensures that the clothespin remains closed when in use, providing a reliable grip on the laundry even in windy conditions.
Smith details in the patent: “Another advantage and a very important one too, [what] my improved clothes pin possesses over the common pin is that it cannot be detached from the clothes by the wind as is the case with the common pin and which is a serious evil to washerwomen.”
As industrialization progressed in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the manufacturing process for wooden clothespins became more mechanized. Wooden clothespin factories emerged, producing large quantities of standardized clothespins at a faster rate and lower cost. This made wooden clothespins more accessible to a broader range of households, contributing to their widespread use as a laundry tool.
Throughout the 20th century, wooden clothespins remained a staple in households worldwide, despite the introduction of alternative materials such as plastic. Their simplicity, durability, and affordability made them a preferred choice for hanging laundry, particularly for those without access to modern drying technologies.
Today, wooden clothespins continue to be produced and used in households around the world, either for crafts or clothes drying, and are cherished for their nostalgic appeal and eco-friendly properties.
While plastic clothespins have become more prevalent in some regions due to their lower cost and mass production, wooden clothespins remain a symbol of traditional laundry practices and sustainable living.
