However, he still needed to retrieve some of his belongings, so we reached a compromise — his parents could come with a temporary access code to collect his things. Little did I know, this agreement would lead to an unexpected invasion of my privacy.

My in-laws had arrived and were making their way through my home, seemingly without a care in the world. But then, to my horror, I watched as my mother-in-law veered off course and headed straight for my bedroom.

Following the lead of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and Denver Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall, a few members of a New Jersey high school football team knelt while the national anthem played.

Like Kaepernick and Marshall, coaches and students combined as the predominantly non-white Woodrow Wilson school performed the controversial move to raise awareness of social and economic injustice, NBC News reports.

Initially, Tigers coach Preston Brown said he was going to kneel alone in protest.

“I am well aware of the third verse of the national anthem which is not usually sung, and I know that the words of the song were not originally meant to include people like me,” he explained.

The silent third verse he’s referring to reads: “No refuge could save the hireling and slave / From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave.”

“[Because] of recent events that happened the last couple years, things I experienced in college being an African-American student athlete in the south, I felt it was an appropriate time to do that,” explained Brown, NJ.com reports.

“I’m African-American, I wouldn’t rather be in any other country,” he added. “But I can’t be oblivious to the things I see every day that are different four blocks away in a neighboring town.”

After informing players of his decision, some of the students decided to join Brown, likely because the students could empathize with his reasons.

“I grew up in poverty, a lot of these kids are growing up in poverty,” explained Brown. “There’s a lot of social injustices and economic disparities. There’s issues right here in our own community.”

While they support standing for the flag, the Camden City School District said they agreed with Brown’s sentiments and praised the students.

“Whether our students choose to stand, kneel, or otherwise, we’re proud of their engagement with what is more broadly a very important social justice issue,” school district spokesman Brendan Lowe said.

Being a parent to a cocky, disrespectful teenager is far from easy, and different parents have different approaches to get their children to behave.

One mom, Heidi Johnson, wrote a handwritten letter to her son, Aaron, and shared it on Facebook. She didn’t intend for the post to go viral. She didn’t even intend to make the post public. It was supposed to just be for friends to see, but she does not regret her post or the fact that it’s public.

In the letter to her 13-year-old son, Johnson reprimanded her son treating her like a “roommate.” She went on to give him an itemized bill for rent, food, etc that totaled over $700. If he was going to treat her like a roommate instead of his mom, she would do the same.

Johnson signed the note, “Love Mom,” and she truly does love her son. She followed up the post with another post explaining some backstory to the situation. She also reassured parents who were criticizing her that “I am not going to put my 13 year old on the street if he can’t pay his half of the rent. I am not wanting him to pay anything. I want him to take pride in his home, his space, and appreciate the gifts and blessings we have.”

She added that she never intended for Aaron to pay the bill. Instead, she wanted him to “gain an appreciation of what things cost.” The reason Johnson wrote the note was to make sure her son understood “what life would look like if I was not his ‘parent,’ but rather a ‘roommate.’ It was a lesson about gratitude and respect from the very beginning.”

Johnson also explained that before she wrote the note, her son had lied about doing his homework, and when she told him she was going to restrict his internet access, he responded, “Well, I am making money now.” She explained that the money he was referring to was a little bit of income he was making from his YouTube channel, but not nearly enough to pay for food and rent.

The public note has not hurt Johnson’s relationship with her son. She explained, “He and I still talk as openly as ever. He has apologized multiple times.”

Johnson has also had parents turning to her for advice since she posted the note to her son. She explains, “My post seems to have opened a door, and people feel safe coming to me and asking for advice, venting, or even just have someone bear witness to their experience by listening and opening up and sharing a piece of myself in return.”

In a move that has electrified the political landscape, President Joe Biden has officially withdrawn from the 2024 presidential race, casting his support and remaining influence behind Vice President Kamala Harris. This strategic shift has set the stage for a heated showdown between Harris and former President Donald Trump, the GOP’s leading candidate for 2024.

President Biden announced his decision on social media, stating, “My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”

The ad, titled “Paid the Price,” takes aim at Harris’s tenure alongside Biden, highlighting what it portrays as her complicity in the administration’s failures. MAGA Inc., the PAC responsible for the ad, issued a statement through spokesman Alex Pfeiffer, who asserted, “Kamala Harris has lied for years now about Joe Biden’s mental condition, and America suffered for it. It’s time now for her to tell the truth and answer this one question: If Joe Biden is unfit for the campaign trail, then how is he fit for office?”

The Trump War Room also took to social media to amplify the ad, posting, “Kamala was in on it. She covered up Joe’s obvious mental decline. Kamala knew Joe couldn’t do the job, so she did it. Look what she got done: a border invasion, runaway inflation, the American Dream dead.”

In his signature style, Trump has already coined a new nickname for his likely opponent: “Laffin’ Kamala Harris.” During a recent rally, Trump quipped, “I call her Laffin’ Kamala. You ever watch her laugh? She’s crazy. You can tell a lot by a laugh… She’s nuts.”

This isn’t the first time Trump has targeted Harris with his unique brand of criticism. He previously dubbed her “Lyin’ Kamala,” referencing her role as the Biden-appointed “Border Chief” who, according to Trump, failed to address the border crisis effectively. Trump commented, “Lyin’ Kamala Harris, the Biden appointed ‘Border [chief]’ who never visited the Border, and whose incompetence gave us the WORST and MOST DANGEROUS Border anywhere in the World, has absolutely terrible pole [sic] numbers against a fine and brilliant young man named DONALD J. TRUMP! Be careful what you wish for, Democrats??? MAGA2024.”

So here I am, caught between my imperfect but lovable husband and my mother, who is dependent on her daughter’s support. In this classic dramatic scenario, I pose the million-dollar question to you, dear reader – what should I do? Should I rent a room to my mother or work on renting out my husband’s sense of empathy?

“Just as the lion was nearly upon me, it slipped. This gave me a bit of an advantage, but soon it was gaining on me again.

As the lion got closer once more, it slipped again! Fortunately, I spotted a house in the distance and sprinted towards it.

With every ounce of energy left, I reached the house. The lion was almost on top of me, but it slipped for the third time at the last moment.

I dashed inside and slammed the door shut, just as the lion’s face almost made it through.”

“Wow, John! That’s an unbelievable story. I would have been scared out of my wits!” Mark exclaimed.

And John, with a grin, replied, “Well, WHAT DO YOU THINK THE LION KEPT SLIPPING ON?”

When we marry, we promise to be together through life’s ups and downs. However, when tragedy struck shortly after their wedding, Suzy and her husband found themselves at a crossroads.
